"I'm a believer. Snakes are fun! I was more than a bit skeptical about using snakes and birds for therapy. I’m accustomed to seeing dogs assisting people, and the benefits of having pets are a given."

From: NewsTrove.com
"MARY Beneforti's cockatiel was acting strangely last night.
"She was sitting on top of her cage and just was refusing to budge," the Darwin mother of two said of the family's pet.
"She was holding herself really tall and still for about 10 to 15 minutes before the quake hit. I think she must have felt it."
Ms Beneforti was speaking after an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck Darwin.
When her house started shaking 15 minutes after she noticed the bird's behaviour, Ms Beneforti thought immediately of the devastating tsunami which followed a huge earthquake in South-East Asia in December."
News & Features | For the birds

"Q: When Judy Irving first approached you and said that she wanted to make a film, what was your initial reaction?
A: I was fine with that. Two other people had come along wanting to make videos, and I was in favor of that, because I wanted to preserve my memories of the birds, because I figured I was leaving soon. And the first two people, nothing happened. So I was sort of skeptical, I guess, but I was happy that she wanted to do it.
Q: How quickly did you feel that Judy really got it, that she wanted to tell the right story, and tell it the right way?"
A Note To Sela
From: NewsTrove.com
"-Written by Ruthie, with love and appreciation!
Since about 1986 I have been involved in animal rescue. It is disheartening how mean people can be to such beautiful animals. Animals only want to please and are so dedicated they will even protect the hand that abuses them. I have adopted many of the rescues that have passed through my door. The main priority to is get them safe and medical care. As with my rescues that usually means little resources left for things like supplies and toys. Cool whip containers become food dishes and toys usually come from yard sales."

"Hi there, I'm owned by a 1.5-year-old female cinnamon tiel (Cinnabun), and 3 bossy budgies (Beep, Bic, and Miko). (Small picture of my Cinna and her human, here)
I've had Cinna since October of '04. On my birthday, my best friends blindfolded me and walked me to a shop in town sells only birds.. and I loved this little girl immediately. Since our day one, she always calls to me when I'm around, or calls to my mother.. She sits on my shoulder or on my desk while I'm doing homework (grueling, grueling double major) .. but as of late, I haven't been around enough. In the mornings (around 6am) I move her from her spot in my room where she sleeps, to out in the common room near the big cage with the budgies. I often don't get home this semestre until 9 or so, and by the time I take her out of her cage, she. is. a. lunatic. *out of her mind* ... circles the room, calling frantically, won't let me pick her up and hold her, won't let me scritch her, won't stay on my shoulder. I feel *so badly.*
And now, she hardly chirps at all. She halfheartedly plays with the toys in her cage, but she seems so depressed. She still eats, etc etc. Sometimes if i take her out, she'll fly around a bit and then sit atop her cage. She'll call a bit when she hears my keys in the door, or when I first come in. . . but she's getting more and more silent.
Can you guys think of anything I can do to make my little one happy again? This is really tearing me to pieces."
My crazy crazy crazy bird.

"Hey everyone! I have a question!
My bird (Alex) is almost 7. I'm starting to refer to him as Jeckall and Hyde because he's been so moody lately! Normally he's a total sweetheart, singing and being so incredibly well behaved.
Then he suddenly changes personalities and turns into this viscious, horny, attack bird who dive bombs you if you enter the kitchen inappropriately (ie, not running and crouching near the floor). He goes through periods like this which last up to 2 months. He has runny droppings, drinks an incredible amount of water, hides in small dark places and tries to bite your feet if you come anywhere near his little hiding spot (which is behind this green crate so you can see him perfectly so it's not like he's hiding). He also masturbates A LOT... it's funny when my friends come over... "what's your bird ---... oh god, I didn't know birds did that".
In a month and a half he'll be fine again. The vet can't find an explanation for his running droppings (he's a healthy little turd). They're only runny when he's acting like this.
Is it mating season? And does mating season happen more than once a year? He does this 2-3 times a year.
My mom doesn't know if he's acting like that because he's not feeling well, or if there's something up with his hormones, or whatever.
And we're 100% sure he's a male.
The rest of the time he wants to be with me or my mom and sings to us, is perfectly happy being left ontop of the piano by himself singing to the piano lamp (it's shiny and reflective!) for hours at a time and has perfect, normal droppings... Now he's agitated and I think he's anxious too, but I'm not sure.
Thanks for your input!"
